Route Description

Historical building

Switchjobs has been situated in the 'Princehof' on the Rapenburg 8-10 since 1991. An impressive building with an interesting history lain on one of the most beautiful moats in the Netherlands.

The location is mentioned in books as early as 1450: during that year a childless couple donated their house to the Sisters of St. Barbara. After having served as a convent for 125 years it was briefly used as a high-school and successively as a residence for His Excellency, Prince William. The prince, his sons Maurits and Fredrik Hendrik, and later his son and grandson also stayed there. In 1667 the first Stadtholdersless era meant the end of the 'Princehof' in that function. The complex that had fallen into disrepair was demolished.

In 1668 a double Lords-house arose on what is now the Rapenburg 8. The beautiful façade has remained almost unchanged ever since then. Since 1903 the Lords-house has been destined as a business premises: It has housed a restaurant, consequently a subsidiary office of a life Insurance Bank, the Dutch Bureau of foreign student relations, and finally Switchjobs.
